Social Media for Natural Disaster Response and Recovery (PER-304) Training

The Northeast Homeland Security Regional Advisory Council (NERAC) is sponsoring a one-day training on the use of social media in disaster response and recovery for public safety professionals that serve the NERAC region and those who support the implementation of their communications plans. Social media can be an invaluable tool in issuing public warnings, directions, and situational updates. When used correctly, social media can also help to monitor public perception of a disaster and to evaluate disaster management efforts.

This 8-hour training was developed by the National Disaster Preparedness Training Center at the University of Hawaii to teach emergency management, communications, and public information personnel about the social media tools available to them and the best way to utilize social media before, during, and after a disaster. The course will define social media and its uses and identify the methods and models to properly make use of social media. The curriculum will cover topics such as using social media to identify trends, monitor events, and how to conduct simple data mining of information. Participants will receive hands-on experience in engaging with social media tools and outlets.

The training will take place on June 9th from 8:30am to 4:30pm. NERAC will provide backfill and overtime support to any eligible non-salaried personnel that attend the training. Participants must bring a wi-fi enabled device. Additionally, while this is an introductory course, participants must create a Twitter and Facebook account prior to attending the course. Lunch will be provided.
